Title: Set up computer for rental use
Post by: Remy on December 30, 2006, 06:22:37 AM
I use a laptop with DMX for my own shows, and occasionally for rental, with some lighting.

I'd like to secure this pc from unauthorised use (as much as I can).

I created a visualDMX user in Windows XP with limited user accounts without a password. And there is a user for me, with password and administrator rights.

VisualDMX uses files are located in the Program Files folder. Because the restricted user cant adjust / edit these files, when closing VisualDMX a number of errors show, all related to the restriction to write to these files.

The reason i'd like the rental users to edit these files is because of the fixture callibration, and the margins for the moving fixtures. So that they don't need to edit this every time after a reboot.
That way I could use automatically created backups to reset VisualDMX after it has been rented.

I tried to put all the user files (configuration / cues / etc. ) outside of the program files folder. But still no permission to edit them.
they problem I think is that I use Windows XP home edition, which has limited user-management.

Has anybody thought about this too ? Or has found a nice solution for systems used for own light-productions, and rental situations ?

Can't you just restore a backup after each rental? J

Try to boot into Safe Mode (Restart the computer, after the boot screen press F8 )

Then edit the userrights in the Visual DMX folder in Program Files. That should work fine.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have got any questions. I can help you with it, but then it is better to do it via msn.
