Title: Make Cuelux starting really fast again (as in the past)
Post by: MTX-Lightning on March 23, 2020, 01:03:43 PM
I have noticed that Cuelux start is slowing down from version to version.
Even an i7 processor with SSD could not change this.
So I have started to optimize the cuelux directory.

BE CAREFUL! FIRST READ ALL!
CREATE BACKUPS BEFORE MOVING / DELETING SOMETHING!
OTHERWISE YOUR SHOWFILE WILL BE ERASED EMPTY!

It's recommend first to start a NEW show and save it as a new filename (e.g. "speedup_v01.xml")
Now if you move the all the fixture files, your cuelux will be really fast.
But without any fixtures, you can not use Cuelux of course ;)
So copy the fixture files you need for your show to the user directory.
Also recommend to copy the "generic.xml" to the user dir.
After that, start Cuelux and you will see that it is starting much faster than before.
Click on "patch" and then use the fixtures under "[USER} ... manufactor"

If you want to optimize more, and you know what you are doing, you can edit the user fixture file and delete all other fixtures except these you are using. Mabe you can use the fixturebuilder for this, too.
If you want to speedup more, you can do the same with the midi library.

My Cuelux is stating now in about 5-10 seconds till I can use all features.

@ Team Visual Productions:
If possible, could you create a way to prevent loading ALL fixture libraries at startup?
It would be fine, just to load the libraries you have in your showfile.
Later if you want to patch you can integrate a loading bar and load all other librarys.
This would be much more effective for most users.
Or just install the generic fixtures, and let the users add devices with the fixture builder.
Years ago, when the librarys were much smaller, cuelux was starting much faster on a retro-pc than this version on a high end PC ;)

Greetings,
Toby

Hi Toby,

Thank you for your guide. It is definitely the loading of the personalities and showfile that makes Cuelux slow down.

I will put your suggestions about what to load on startup and what to load when opening the patch view on the wishlist. This might be a very big change in the software though...

Greetings,
Bootsy
