Flame effect tips

I am about to program a theatre show which includes a fire scene.  In it there is a fire located at the rear of the stage, up against the cyc.  I'm planning to place a smoke machine or two and a couple of LED wash lights at floor level.  Most of the rest of the stage will be unlit or lit only with strobe effects.  The effect I'm looking for at the rear of the stage is a significant, fast burning fire/explosion.

Does anyone have any specific tips or better still, does anyone have a show file with a similar effect you'd be willing to share with me?
